What is a Neck Lift?
A neck lift, or lower rhytidectomy, is a cosmetic surgery that enhances the appearance of the neck and jawline by reducing excess skin and fat, tightening underlying muscles, and improving the contour of the jawline.
A neck lift can address the following concerns:
- Excess fat and skin relaxation in the lower face that creates jowls
- Excess fatty deposits under the chin
- Loose neck skin
- Muscle banding in the neck, which creates abnormal contours
Dr. Cohen offers two types of neck surgery tailored to your different needs.
Internal Neck Lift
The internal neck lift or “submentoplasty” is ideal for younger patients without significant laxity. It involves incisions under the chin and sometimes under the earlobes to address deep fullness, fat reduction, gland reduction, and muscle tightening without removing skin.
Aging Face Procedure
The aging face procedure is more comprehensive. It addresses sagging and gravity-induced changes that result in excess skin. This treatment is performed with a facelift to address the midface, jowl, and neck together to maintain a balanced and natural appearance over time. The aging face procedure rejuvenates the neck structures vertically for a natural-looking result.

Candidates for a Neck Lift
Ideal candidates for a neck lift are individuals in good general health, non-smokers, and those with realistic expectations about what the surgery can accomplish. Candidates often experience signs of aging that do not match their overall facial appearance. The internal neck lift is ideal for candidates without significant laxity, whereas the aging face neck lift is ideal for individuals wishing to improve their face and neck. A consultation at the Cohen Clinic for Plastic Surgery will help determine if a neck lift suits your cosmetic needs.
Neck Lift Procedure
The neck lift procedure is typically performed with intravenous sedation to help you maintain optimal comfort during treatment. The approach used during the surgery depends on the extent of change you wish to see.
Internal Neck Lift Procedure
During the internal neck lift, precise incisions are made under the chin and, in some cases, under the earlobes. Through these incisions, Dr. Cohen addresses deep fat deposits, reduces enlarged glands, and tightens loose muscles. This procedure focuses on refining facial contours and does not involve skin removal.
Aging Face Procedure
The aging face procedure addresses more advanced signs of aging in the face. This comprehensive neck treatment is performed alongside a facelift. The surgery begins with Dr. Cohen making careful incisions to access and lift sagging tissues. Dr. Cohen then repositions facial and neck muscles, removes excess skin, and closes incisions for optimal results. This combined approach rejuvenates the entire midface, jowl, and neck areas, ensuring a balanced and natural appearance.
Neck Lift Recovery and Results
Recovery from each of our neck lift treatments generally takes several weeks, during which patients may experience some swelling and bruising. Most individuals can return to work and other normal activities within two weeks, following Dr. Cohen’s advice on care and restrictions. The results of a neck lift are visible once the swelling subsides and will continue to improve over several months. These results are typically long-lasting, giving patients a more youthful appearance.

If I could give Dr. Cohen and his staff 10 stars, I would. He is an amazing surgeon. I am three weeks post surgery, and I cannot believe the difference already. I had a deep plane lift, eyes, and neck surgery. Not only is he an outstanding surgeon, he is a very warm and caring person. His staff is the same way. He takes his time explaining everything in terms you can understand. You will love him!

Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs)
Is Neck lift surgery dangerous?
Neck lifts and facelifts are common procedures performed to reduce visible signs of aging. At the Cohen Clinic for Plastic Surgery we specialize in facial rejuvenation and the neck lift is one of our most frequently performed surgeries. The procedure is extremely safe when performed appropriately by an experienced surgeon. There are inherent risks to the required anesthesia so a preoperative medical evaluation should be considered for any patient considering surgery.
What is a liquid facelift?
A “liquid facelift” is a non-surgical procedure where dermal fillers are injected to create the illusion of a lift and, thereby, rejuvenate the face. It is best reserved for younger patients without true sagging or looseness.
How do I prepare for a neck lift?
When you come in for a consultation at the Cohen Clinic for Plastic Surgery, we’ll give you full instructions on what to do to prepare for your neck lift surgery, including sticking to a healthy diet, avoiding nicotine and blood thinners, limiting your alcohol intake, and planning for your recovery. Part of planning will include arranging for someone to drive you from surgery and help you stay comfortable for at least the first 24 hours. If you are coming from out-of-town you should expect to stay locally for at least 10 days.
What is a lunchtime facelift?
A “lunchtime facelift” is a marketing term generally used by many practices to describe either a type of surgical “mini” facelift or a non-surgical procedure such as a thread lift. It implies a quick procedure with little downtime. Unfortunately, the results tend to be underwhelming and can lead to complications that come along with “short cut” techniques. At the Cohen Clinic we don’t offer this surgery, and prefer to focus only on procedures that provide predictable, lasting, and natural results.
What is a neck lift?
A neck lift is a surgical procedure designed to rejuvenate and improve the appearance of the neck and jawline. The procedure may involve incisions either under the chin or around the ears (or both), and could involve the removal of excess skin and fat, re-tightening and suspension of loose muscle, and/or sculpting of excess volume in the deeper areas of the neck to create a youthful, contoured appearance. At the Cohen Clinic for Plastic Surgery we can customize the plan based on your goals and anatomy in order to give you the best result possible.
How do I tighten my jawline?
Tightening the jawline can be done in a number of different ways, including with a neck lift. The right option for you will depend on the results you’re looking for and what’s causing the concerns. With a neck lift, Dr. Cohen will remove excess skin, sculpt excess fat and volume, and tighten the underlying muscles, helping you achieve a younger-looking and more defined jawline.
How long does it take to recover from a neck lift?
Recovery from a neck lift can vary depending on the extent of your surgery and whether or not additional procedures, like a facelift, were performed. Dr. Cohen’s post-op instructions are the best way to ensure a speedy recovery. Usually, patients feel “restaurant ready”, or can return to work, after around two weeks. Light exercise can resume then as well, with more strenuous activities resuming 6-8 weeks after surgery. Full recovery typically takes 3-6 months or longer, as any final swelling and tightness dissipates.
How much does a facelift and neck lift cost?
Cost of facelift and neck lift surgery varies greatly based on factors such as location, surgeon experience, and case complexity. As a result, a facelift and neck lift could be done for as low as $10,000 in some practices, or as high as $100,000, or more, in others. Regardless, it’s important to find a surgeon and team where you feel a connection, so at whatever the price you recognize and appreciate the value.
