At the Cohen Clinic for Plastic Surgery in McLean, Virginia, we specialize in enhancing your natural beauty through state-of-the-art facial plastic surgery procedures and cosmetic treatments. One of our most popular procedures is blepharoplasty, also known as an eyelid lift. This procedure can help to improve the appearance of the eyes, making you appear younger. Eyelid Lifts are tailored to each patient, allowing you to address your cosmetic concerns. We offer a variety of eyelid treatments customized to your needs, whether you are looking for upper blepharoplasty, lower eyelid blepharoplasty, or both.
What is Blepharoplasty?
Blepharoplasty is a surgical procedure aimed at improving the appearance and functionality of the eyelids. An eyelid lift can address various cosmetic concerns, including sagging skin, undereye bags, and drooping eyelids. This procedure can be performed on the upper lids, lower lids, or both to refresh the surrounding area of your eyes.
Upper eyelid surgery, lower eyelid surgery, or a combination can address the following concerns:
- Excess, hanging skin that hides the natural fold of the upper eyelids
- Puffy eyelids
- Bags and dark circles under the eyes
- Fine wrinkles and excess skin on the lower eyelid
- Lower eyelids that droop and reveal white below the iris
- Drooping eyelid skin or droopy eyelids
- Sagging upper eyelids
- Excess fat on the eyelids

Candidates for Blepharoplasty
Ideal candidates for an eyelid lift are individuals who are in good overall health, do not smoke, and do not have any severe eye conditions. You may consider blepharoplasty eyelid surgery if you are bothered by the appearance of your upper and lower eyelids or if you experience functional problems associated with sagging or drooping eyelids. During your consultation at the Cohen Clinic for Plastic Surgery, Dr. Cohen will evaluate your condition to determine if you are a good candidate for blepharoplasty treatment.
Blepharoplasty Procedure
The blepharoplasty procedure is typically performed under local anesthesia or intravenous sedation, based on the extent of the surgery. During an upper blepharoplasty, patients receive local anesthesia, and the incision is made within the lid’s natural crease to minimize visibility. During lower blepharoplasty, intravenous sedation is given, and the incision is hidden just below the lashes or inside the eyelid. Through these incisions, excess skin, muscle, and fat are removed or repositioned by Dr. Cohen to achieve a more youthful appearance. The incisions are then closed with fine sutures.
Blepharoplasty Recovery and Results
Recovery from eyelid surgery usually involves a short period of swelling and bruising. Most patients can resume normal activities within ten days, although complete recovery may take several weeks. Results are long-lasting and can help restore a more youthful, refreshed look to your eyes. Dr. Cohen and his team will provide detailed post-operative care instructions to ensure a smooth and efficient healing process. Additional treatments, including a brow reset, fat grafting, or CO2 laser treatment, can help to enhance your results. The ideal way to determine the right treatment plan for your needs is to schedule a consultation with Dr. Cohen.

Dr. Cohen performed my lower blepharoplasty with fat transfer. I recently underwent an upper and lower blepharoplasty performed by Dr. Cohen for my aging eyes, and I cannot express how thrilled I am with the results. I am only 12 days post-surgery, and I can confidently say my eyes are now refreshed and very natural-looking. Also, the healing process has been much faster than I anticipated, and I attribute this to Dr. Cohen’s technical expertise. The entire process from the initial consultation to now has been wonderful and I cannot say enough nice things about him or his team. A truly life-changing experience, and I recommend anyone considering a blepharoplasty to make an appointment for a consultation.

Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs)
Can Botox lift droopy eyelids?
While not as widely known, yes, Botox can lift mild droopy eyelids, but it does so indirectly. By relaxing the muscles that pull the eyebrows down, there is less heaviness from above, so the eyelids can naturally feel more open and bright. Patients with this concern often come to us thinking they may need a more invasive procedure and are happy to discover they simply need a few injections.
Can droopy eyelids cause blurred vision?
Blurred vision is unlikely to be caused by droopy eyelids alone. However, if the eyelid hangs low enough to block the pupil then it can certainly be responsible for reduced vision. Luckily, with eyelid surgery, Dr. Cohen can lift and rejuvenate the eyelid, allowing you a clearer field of vision and a revitalized appearance.
Can I sleep on my side after eyelid surgery?
As you start your recovery, you should avoid sleeping on your side after eyelid surgery if possible, as it could cause more swelling or tension at your sutures. This could negatively affect your results. Dr. Cohen will let you know when sleeping on your side is okay.
Can you get rid of hooded eyelids?
Of course! Eyelid surgery can be incredibly effective at getting rid of hooded eyelids and helping you look years younger, but it can depend on what is causing the hooded eyelids to begin with. If it’s caused by stretched, excess skin, eyelid surgery is likely the perfect solution. But if hooded eyelids are due to a problem within the muscle of the eyelid, ptosis repair is typically a better option. A comprehensive examination during your consultation will allow us to determine the appropriate treatment option.
Can you go blind from blepharoplasty?
Dr. Cohen considers your safety as his number one priority, and eyelid surgery has a very long track record of success. While knowing the risks before surgery is a vital and important part of the surgical process, with an experienced surgeon like Dr. Cohen, severe risks like blindness are extremely rare following blepharoplasty.
Does eyelid surgery leave scars?
Eyelid surgery can leave scars, but because the incisions are placed in hidden areas, like in the natural crease of the eyelid, they should become nearly invisible over time. Additionally, Dr. Cohen will provide you with guidelines on how to take care of the treatment area to minimize the chances of any visible scarring.
How do you fix droopy eyelids?
Correcting droopy eyelids appropriately means treating the underlying cause. Eyelids can be “droopy” if too much skin has stretched across the upper eyelid over time. Alternatively, there can be issues within the muscle of the eyelid causing the lower margin to fall and partially cover the pupil. This is referred to as eyelid “ptosis”. Excess skin can easily be removed during a blepharoplasty procedure to recontour a mature upper eyelid. Ptosis repair involves shortening or tightening the eyelid muscle to raise it and reopen the eye. It is important to note that the treatment for one condition does not improve the other, and therefore, a thorough examination is necessary to identify the appropriate underlying cause of your eyelid appearance prior to considering surgery.
How much is an eyelid surgery?
Cost of cosmetic eyelid surgery varies greatly based on factors such as location, surgeon experience, and case complexity. For eyelid surgery, specifically, more advanced techniques like fat grafting or CO2 laser, tend to command higher prices. As a result, an eyelid surgery could be done for as low as $3,000 in some cases, or as high as $25,000, or more. Regardless, it’s important to find a surgeon and team where you feel a connection, so at whatever the price you recognize and appreciate the value.
Is eyelid surgery safe?
Eyelid surgery is one of the most common cosmetic procedures performed today. It has a significant track record of positive outcomes and is perfectly safe when done correctly by an experienced surgeon. The majority of cases can be done simply under local anesthesia, however, some cases require IV sedation or general anesthesia. Anesthesia carries inherent medical risks so a full preoperative medical evaluation should be considered for any patient undergoing eyelid surgery.
What can I expect after eyelid surgery?
Eyelid surgery at the Cohen Clinic for Plastic Surgery should leave you feeling refreshed and engaged, without tell-tale signs of traditional eyelid procedures. There is generally a 1-2 week recovery period of mostly social downtime, with mild to moderate bruising and swelling expected. Vision may be temporarily blurry or uncomfortable during the first several days following the procedure. If used, sutures are typically removed around 1 week out. Healing improves gradually, with most patients seeing final results between 6 and 12 months from surgery.
