Facelift Incision Healing: What to Expect Over Time

1 week – 10 days
Incisions are fresh and may look pink or slightly raised. Mild swelling and bruising are normal at this stage. Sutures are typically removed, and we focus on keeping the area clean and protected while healing begins.

4 weeks
Incisions are healing well and becoming flatter. Redness may still be present, but swelling continues to improve. Makeup and hair styling can usually camouflage this phase easily.

3 months
Scars are much softer and lighter in color. Any firmness or tightness is resolving, and incisions are blending more naturally into the skin and hairline.

6 months
Incisions are faint and well-healed. At this stage, most patients find their scars difficult to notice, even with short hairstyles or pulled-back hair.

🔍 Why incision placement matters

Facelift incisions are thoughtfully placed in front of or behind the tragus (the small cartilage at the front of the ear) based on:
• Skin quality and thickness
• Gender and hairline considerations
• Natural facial contours
• The goal of keeping scars discreet and well-camouflaged

The priority is always a natural result with scars that heal invisibly over time.

Every face — and every healing process — is unique. This is why incision planning is one of the most important parts of facelift surgery.

The lower third of the face is often where aging and maturity are first noticed. It’s the culmination of looseness throughout the face that gets collected around the mouth and chin by gravity.

However, in order to properly rejuvenate this area is so important to understand it takes more than just a good facelift.

This is something that has taken me years to refine. The best and most natural result comes from volume reduction (deep neck sculpting with or without buccal fat reduction), volume addition with microfat and nanofat (to valleys, shadows, and chin), and appropriately vectored soft tissue repositioning through my preservation deep-plane facelift technique. Added bonus with surface improvements brought about with CO2 laser resurfacing.

When done well these individual maneuvers add up to an elegant and beautiful result that is, quite simply, a younger version of You.
